Project Description:

This project addresses the challenge of using tactile graphics to make visual information such as images, maps, and diagrams accessible to blind and low-vision audiences. The project investigates reproducible, DIY methods for creating high-quality tactile graphics using common makerspace tools and materials. Through material experimentation, user testing, and partnerships with accessibility organizations and educators, students will develop and refine techniques that balance feasibility, cost, and communicative value. The outcomes will include an exhibition of interactive tactile graphics and an open, accessible resource guide to support teachers, parents, and institutions in producing their own tactile materials. Ultimately, this project seeks to expand cultural and educational access by supporting tactile design as a sustainable, creative approach to inclusive communication.

All majors are welcome to apply. Students with strong interests in graphic design, adaptive technologies, community-based disability solutions, and special education would be particularly relevant to this project.
