Project Description:
The goal of this project is to build NLP (natural language processing) tools that help revitalize the languages of indigenous people. Students will develop novel hybrid machine learning techniques that combine data-driven approaches with knowledge-based approaches, working in collaboration with local partners such as Lehigh’s Institute for Indigenous Studies and the Museum of Indian Culture in Allentown to collect data on Native American languages. Studies show that language preservation not only revitalizes rich cultures and identities but also helps with mental health. CSE and Computational Linguistics students, particularly Native American (indigenous) students, are especially encouraged to apply, but all students with an interest in the topic are welcome to apply.
