Program Summary:
The HDSE Leadership Intensive is envisioned as a high-octane, in-person workshop that will bring together an interdisciplinary cohort of highly motivated students from across India for a week of inspiration, collaboration, and social innovation. Set on the beautiful Agastya International Foundation Innovation Campus in Kuppam, just three hours from Bengaluru, this hands-on, hearts-on experience will foster transformative learning and entrepreneurial action.
Guided by Global Social Impact Fellows from Lehigh University, participants will work closely with nonprofit leaders and K-12 education innovators to co-create practical, innovative, and sustainable solutions that can amplify Agastya’s mission of nurturing a new generation of tinkerers, innovators, and solution-seekers in India. Through immersive, real-world projects, participants will develop the skillsets, mindsets, and portfolios necessary to tackle complex societal challenges. The pursuit of sustainable impact is at the core of this experience, preparing students to lead lives of purpose and create lasting change.

For Participants
- Immersive Learning: Through a series of workshops, discussions, and hands-on activities, participants delve into the principles of creative inquiry, humanitarian design, and social entrepreneurship. They explore real-world case studies and engage in practical exercises to deepen their understanding.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Participants form interdisciplinary teams, leveraging their diverse backgrounds and expertise to tackle complex challenges. They collaborate closely with mentors and peers, fostering a culture of innovation and co-creation.
- Project Development: Teams work on actionable projects aimed at addressing specific social, economic, and environmental challenges. They develop innovative solutions, design sustainable business models, and refine their storytelling skills.
- Pitch Presentations: At the culmination of the program, teams present their projects to a panel of judges, showcasing their innovative solutions and sustainable business models. This provides an opportunity to receive feedback, gain exposure, and attract potential partners to advance the projects forward.
- Understanding of Global Grand Challenges: Participants will gain a deep understanding of global grand challenges, including social, economic, and environmental issues, and their interconnectedness. They will explore ways in which the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) influence the day-to-day lives of people across the Indian subcontinent.
- Understanding of Creative Inquiry and Humanitarian Design: Participants will gain a deep understanding of the principles of creative inquiry and humanitarian design, learning how to apply these methodologies to address social, economic, and environmental challenges effectively.
- Understanding of Social Entrepreneurship: Participants will develop a deeper understanding of social entrepreneurship, learning how to identify actionable opportunities, design innovative solutions, and develop sustainable business models that create positive social impact.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration Skills: Through interdisciplinary teamwork, participants will learn to leverage diverse perspectives and expertise to tackle complex challenges collaboratively. They will develop communication, teamwork, and leadership skills essential for effective collaboration.
- Practical Project Development Skills: Participants will gain practical skills in project development, including problem-solving, ideation, prototyping, and implementation. They will learn how to translate ideas into actionable projects with tangible outcomes.
- Storytelling and Communication Skills: Participants will refine their storytelling and communication skills, learning how to effectively convey the stories behind their projects to various stakeholders, including social investors, partners, and the broader community.
- Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving Abilities: Participants will enhance their critical thinking and problem-solving abilities by engaging with real-world case studies and practical exercises. They will learn to analyze complex issues, identify root causes, and develop innovative solutions.
- Resilience and Adaptability: Participants will cultivate resilience and adaptability, learning how to navigate uncertainty, overcome challenges, and iterate on their ideas and projects based on feedback and changing circumstances.
- Ethical and Sustainable Practices: Participants will develop an understanding of ethical and sustainable practices in social entrepreneurship, considering the social, economic, and environmental impacts of their projects and striving to create positive change responsibly.
10. Network Building: The workshop will enable participants to build a network of like- minded students, faculty, and nonprofit leaders that are passionate about transformative education and social impact.
11. Commitment to Social Impact: Participants will leave the workshop with a commitment to fostering a new generation of socially conscious engineers, designers, entrepreneurs, and leaders.

- 9:00 – 11:00 Humanitarian Design for Sustainability: Design Principles, Questions, Tools, and Methods
Workshop for student teams to start fleshing out their design approach and technological design questions. - 11:00 – 1:00 Design Thinking in Action: Get Out of the Building (GOOTB)
Teams will start applying Design Thinking and Doing Strategies to engage with stakeholders, get validation, and build partnerships. - 1:00 – 2:00 Lunch
- 2:00 – 3:00 Question Formulation Technique to set Big Hairy Audacious Goals (BHAGs)
Teams will apply the QFT to identify and prioritize questions that will help them develop project strategy and close in on their BHAGs. - 3:00 – 4:30 Project Work
Teams will work on their projects with all student and faculty coaches floating around and helping teams advance their work forward. They will prepare for their next round of presentations. - 4:30 – 6:30 Team Presentations (5 min + Q&A): Dream → Opportunity → Tech Innovation
Teams will deliver 5-minute presentations that capture the dreams and aspirations of their sustainability-focused project, identify the specific problem they will seek to address, and discuss their technology innovation. - 7:30 – 8:00 Daily Debrief

How will the envisioned sustainable change actually happen? How will teams engage with various stakeholders? What are the most important success metrics in the short- and long-term? - 11:00 – 12:00 Teamwork and Leadership Workshop
What are various leadership approaches and styles? What are the most common challenges that teams face? How can participants develop as leaders and play by strengths to accomplish project goals? - 12:00 – 1:00 Customers and Value Propositions
Whom is our project serving? How exactly are we creating value for them and how will we effectively communicate this value so as to win their buy-in and support? - 1:00 – 2:00 Working Lunch - Refine Value Propositions
- 2:00 – 4:30 Review of Business Model Canvas (BMC)
What kind of business and operations model will ensure that we deliver sustainable impact beyond our engagement with the project? It’s time to start developing and validating robust business models. Teams will “spar” with the expert coaches as well as other teams. - 4:30 – 6:30 Team Presentations (5 min + Q&A): Dream → Opportunity → Innovation → Business Model
Teams will build on the previous presentation to deliver 5-minute presentations that also include their business models. - 7:30 – 8:00 Daily Debrief

Day 4: Thursday, June 5
- 9:00 – 11:00 Panel Discussion: From Models and Projects to Sustainable Organizations!
This panel will feature experienced leaders, entrepreneurs, and change-makers who will share the challenges, opportunities, and practical strategies to convert project models into sustainable ventures and organizations that deliver value and contribute to sustainable development in the long term. - 11:00 – 1:00 Project Work
Teams will continue working on their projects with a focus on their “go to market” strategy to sustain and scale their sustainable impact. - 1:00 – 2:00 Working Lunch
- 2:00 – 2:45 Model Presentation
One of the Lehigh Teams or an external sustainability-focused organization from Bangalore will deliver a model 10 minute presentation followed by Q/A from the coaches. The objective is to model best practices and inspire the teams to prepare for their final presentations on Friday. - 2:45 – 7:15 Project Work and Individual Feedback
All coaches will spar with the teams and help them prepare for their final presentations.
Popup Plenary: Common Themes Across Project Teams
At some point, expert coaches will share their common observations from all the team conversations and final words of wisdom.
Day 5: Friday, June 6
- 9:00 – 12:00 Final Presentations
Students will deliver their final presentations to referees. - 12:00 – 1:00 Debrief and Opportunities Ahead
Participants will share their summative reflections and learn about forthcoming opportunities such as presenting their projects at the IUCEE conference in January, pursuing graduate programs at Lehigh, collaborating with Lehigh on various sustainability projects, opportunities at Swinburne university, etc. - 1:00 – 2:00 Lunch

Referees for the final presentations will identify the most compelling projects who will receive trophies and cash awards. - 2:00 onwards Participants return home and launch their projects.
