2027 Impact Fellows:

Project Description:
Millions of people in medically underserved regions lack regular access to clinical diagnostics capable of detecting early signs of cardiovascular disease. To address this global health disparity, this Global Social Impact Fellowship project is developing a low-cost, cloud-connected mobile platform that transforms ordinary smartphones into non-invasive cardiorespiratory monitors. By recording micro-chest vibrations—seismocardiography (SCG) and gyrocardiography (GCG)—via onboard accelerometers and gyroscopes, the application processes signals in real time to estimate vital health indicators.

Undergraduate researchers on this interdisciplinary team will bridge biomedical engineering, computer science, and global health to build and test three distinct app interfaces designed for patients, clinicians, and researchers. Students will gain hands-on experience developing background algorithms, refining user interfaces, and preparing the technology for field implementation in partnership with healthcare institutions in Brazil. If you are eager to apply your technical skills to deliver scalable, life-saving healthcare solutions to underserved communities, this project offers a direct path to high-impact international research.
