Project Description:
TrackTB is an innovative digital health initiative dedicated to transforming tuberculosis (TB) treatment adherence and communication between patients and providers. Our project is a digital health platform where patients can track their TB medication through daily surveys. We are currently working with local healthcare professionals and partners in the Philippines to address the highest TB rates globally stemming from medication nonadherence, limited follow-up, and barriers to accessing care.

The TrackTB system uses patient-facing Messenger surveys and a secure clinician portal to tackle two major barriers to TB treatment: medication nonadherence and unmanaged adverse drug reactions (ADRs). Through a 2-13-item daily check-in on Facebook Messenger, patients report both dose completion and any experienced ADRs; clinicians receive this information in real time through an online dashboard that flags missed doses and reported side effects. This enables early intervention, prevents treatment interruption, and supports safer medication management. By using a familiar, low-barrier platform already widespread in the Philippines, TrackTB strengthens patient-provider communication while improving ADR monitoring.

This collaborative effort is supported by partnerships with healthcare organizations, including Fe del Mundo TB clinic, USAID, University of the Philippines-Diliman, Ateneo Intellectual Property, and Ignite Impact. Through prototyping and beta testing, the team aims to deliver a system that is locally responsive, clinically useful, and accessible—ultimately improving patient safety and supporting national TB goals.

This project will also work with capstone students from the Computer Science and Business (CSB) major. All students on the project team will be expected to travel for fieldwork. The non-CSB team in GSIF is open to all majors, but priority consideration will be given to students with interests in public health, communications, and systems design.
